Basic Equipment Requirements

3D object

Photographic Shelf

Please choose from the VR Supporter base, M1, or S1 to suit your requirements and note that a camera tripod is required when using the standalone turntable base. The basic requirements of 3D object Photographic Shelf include stability, precision, and ease-of-use for the object turntable. Other critical requirements include technical and accessory support, reliability, as well as specifications and operation for professional photographers.

VR Supporter product series fulfills these requirements and is reasonably priced for its precision mechanical engineering. It works with all cameras and produces high quality Object Movies at a fraction of the cost.

Digital Camera

Any digital camera from consumer class to DSLR that features manual mode may be used, optimally with a shutter cord. Simple digital cameras with only auto mode will result in inconsistent focus and illuminations.

VR Object Photography takes a series of pictures of an object from different angles, and then the pictures can be stitched together in software to become an interactive 3D image. The series of pictures must be taken while under identical conditions to be able to result in the smooth playing interactive image, and therefore the camera must optimally feature manual mode.

Studio Lighting

Studio lighting with continuous light output should be used, with cold cathode lamps if possible. If the object does not react to temperature, then hot element lamps may be used instead, but flashlight is not recommended. The light stand and light frame can also be used accordingly. The quantity of the light source used can range from the basic 2~3 units to intermediate/advanced 4~8 units based on user needs.


Either use white or black background that is not susceptible to reflection; either cloth or paper materials may be used as the background screen. In making VR Object Movie, background images processing is one of the most difficult tasks involved, and a well-defined sequence includes background setup, lighting, filming, post-production background removal etc. The specially designed VR Supporter 3D Photo Background Kit can be used to result in high quality shots without backbreaking post-production costs.



Image browsing software such as ACDSee can be used to perform quick renaming, sorting, converting, cropping, and quality balancing processes etc. While image manipulating software, such as Ulead PhotoImpact or Adobe Photoshop, may be used to significantly modify the image, create text, remove background, and image composition etc.

Image Stitching


After the shots for VR capture are ready, specialized stitching software is required to generate the interactive 3D image from the individual shots. There currently exist numerous products from different companies that can accomplish this task, and we recommend VR WORX that is compatible with both Windows and Mac platforms. VR WORX has an easy-to-use interface and supports multi-row perpendicular viewpoints. QuickTime VR format supported by VR WORX also has excellent performance in image quality as well as interactivity.

Advanced Recommendations

Choosing a camera

VR Supporter may be used with almost all models of small digital cameras that can be mounted. However, higher end DSLR cameras with interchangeable lens should be used for professional photography and efficiency. Major manufacturers of DSLR cameras include CANON, NIKON, SONY, FUJIFILM, PENTAX, and OLYMPUS etc. produce great results. The user should properly evaluate different models and peripherals to suit their individual needs, in addition to setting the budget and future upgrade plans. If the user does not have a preference or an existing camera system, it is recommended to start with CANON or NIKON cameras as they support different lens and peripherals, feature good performance, and a large user base with great know-how. The VR Supporter will define a set limit on the distance between the camera and the object; therefore a standard focus lens with shorter focal distance should be used.

Selecting a

background color

For the purpose of making the target object standout from the background, bright objects are more suited to black backgrounds, and darker objects should be shot in front of white backgrounds. In addition, other background colors may be used to create atmosphere or benefit in the post-production background removal process, but the resulting background removal process may be too cost prohibitive and difficult to perform.

Selecting an

output format

Interactive VR Object Movie simulates a 3D object from large quantities of 2D pictures and is interactive in nature with the user controlling the view angle. A specialized software or application is required to generate the Object Movie from the series of shots taken from the target object.

Most common formats of demonstrating this effect on the Web includes Quick Time VR, Flash VR, and Java VR.

Quick Time VR is currently the format that has the highest image quality and most mature software technology. The end result is of professional grade and suitable for both VR environment and VR object. Quick Time VR includes a complete package of features to easily create the smooth flowing effects, and the mov file output may be easily managed to embed into web pages. The playback software is a free download from Apple, but its popularity is slightly behind the more popular Flash technology.

Flash VR is not up to par in making professional looking results and is harder to achieve a high target quality. Both VR environment and VR object can be generated, but the interactivity and image quality is merely sufficient. The swf file output can only be used with specially written applications and is harder to manage with embedded web pages. The playback software is a free download from Adobe and is highly popular because the majority of web users will be able to view the contents, and thereby generates maximum word-of-mouth effect.

Java VR is yet lacking in maturity compared to the previous two products, and is commonly used in horizontal 360X object demonstration and 360X environment demonstration, while the VR object image quality falls behind the previous two products. File management and the web page embedded movie is similar to the Flash format, but lack the convenience of handling the QTVR file. Even though there are numerous developers for the Java player and most are commonly available, sometimes versions are incompatible with each other and may cause confusion with web users.

Obiect Movie applications are currently offered from numerous companies and may be purchased from the individual dealers. Most of the time, production software is a purchased product and the playback software is freely available for download. For high-end professional purposes (e.g. digital library, single unit display, boutique demonstration) Quick Time VR format can be used; for popularity and ease-of-use purposes (e.g. consumer products, internet usage) the Flash VR format is more suitable; or both formats can be used at the same time offering a selection for the viewer.
